Evaluation, Monitoring and Treatment of Eye Disease
At Mt Tam Optometric Center, our comprehensive exam is designed to screen for ocular diseases. If we detect evidence of an eye disease, we perform additional testing to provide a specific diagnosis. Finally, we will initiate a plan of treatment (as necessary) by addressing the following goals:
- Detect and diagnose ocular abnormalities and diseases.
- Identify risk factors for ocular disease.
- Identify risk factors for systemic disease based on ocular findings.
- Establish the presence or absence of ocular signs or symptoms of systemic disease.
- Determine the refractive and health status of the eye, visual system, and related structures.
- Discuss the results and implications of the examination with you.
Initiate an appropriate management plan, which may include;
- further diagnostic tests
- treatment as indicated, with follow-up visits to monitor progress
- referral to specialists for further testing or treatment
LASIK Pre and Post Op Care & Free LASIK Evaluation
Dr. Frank has been involved with LASIK since there were only two lasers in the state. He currently does pre- and post-op care for over fifteen different LASIK Centers and is even an “expert witness” in the field. This sort of background makes Mt. Tam Optometric Center is an excellent choice to be your LASIK coordinator.
Upon completion of your Free LASIK Evaluation, you will know that:
you are a good candidate for LASIK
which of the myriad procedures and technologies is best for you
that you have reasonable expectations about what it can provide for you
which of the many LASIK providers available here in the bay area will best provide those things that you deem important. Most people want good value for money and an excellent surgeon. Those are a given from our perspective. Why individuals choose different providers is about as varied as people getting LASIK. Some people want the surgeon most involved in research or who has the most credentials. Others just want the best hand holding staff. We have worked with most of the LASIK providers so we can help you choose which one will be best for you. If you would like to tour the facilities or meet the surgeons, we would be happy to arrange that for you.
Once you have picked a LASIK center, the next step is a pre-op exam. There are several purposes for this exam. The most important is that we want to rule out any physiological reason why you shouldn’t do LASIK. The last thing we want is for you to have a perfect procedure and not see as well as you had hoped. The other purpose has changed over the years. In the early days, our numbers were what drove the laser. Now that most people have Wave Front driven LASIK, our numbers act as a red flag. The surgeons who have worked together with us over the years know that if our numbers are different than those determined by the Wave Front technology, then everything stops until we figure out why.
If all is well, then our staff will help you set up the appointments for the procedure and for your follow up care. Depending on whom you choose to do the LASIK, either the surgeon, or we, will provide the one day follow-up visit. After that we usually see patients at one week, one month, three months, and six months after the procedure. Of course, if additional visits are required, those are included as part of the follow-up care. Most patients are now electing to add RevitalVision® to their Rehab program.
Check out our article on RevitalVision®. We strongly advise you to do this to maximize your return on the investment you have made with LASIK. From this moment on through the entire process, we are at your disposal for any questions or concerns you may have.
Am I a candidate for LASIK?
Mt Tam Optometric Center, and your LASIK surgeon, will make an evaluation of these factors, and will advise you on the best course for you. The main factors we will examine are:
This corresponds to your glasses prescription. Each laser system has its own range of prescription that it is approved to treat. The LADARVision system can treat from +6.00 diopters of farsightedness to -12.00 diopters of nearsightedness. Also, up to -6.00 diopters of astigmatism can be treated. The limit of treatment in your case will be determined by the thickness and curvature of your cornea before treatment.
We, and your LASIK surgeon will measure the thickness of the clear front surface of your eye (the cornea). This is important because your vision is corrected in LASIK by re-shaping your corneal surface with the laser. This is accomplished by a precise sculpting of the cornea by the laser. The greater your glasses prescription, the greater amount of corneal tissue is removed during the LASIK procedure. Your corneal thickness before LASIK will be measured, and the final thickness after LASIK will be calculated. The LASIK surgeon must be satisfied that the final corneal thickness will be sufficient to avoid complications.
Your corneal curvature is part of what determines your glasses prescription. Farsighted people tend to have flatter corneal curvatures, and nearsighted people tend to have steeper corneas. Astigmatism is due partly to unequal vertical and horizontal curves of the corneal surface. Your corneal curvature will be measured, and your final curvature after LASIK will be calculated. Your curvature before and after LASIK must be within a safe range to proceed with LASIK.
Overall Ocular Health
We, and your LASIK surgeon will determine whether there are any underlying conditions that would interfere with obtaining a positive result in your LASIK procedure. Some conditions, such as macular degeneration and cataracts, would affect your level of vision despite a good LASIK outcome. Other conditions, such as central serous retinopathy and prescription fluctuations in diabetes must be resolved before you can proceed with LASIK. Women should wait about 2 months following childbirth to allow their prescription to stabilize after pregnancy.
Cataract Pre and Post Op Care & Free IOL Evaluation
Cataract procedures and what they can do for you have changed a lot in the last few years. We at Mt Tam Optometric Center have had the pleasure to work closely with some of the top surgeons in the Bay Area as the new generations of Refractive Implants have become available. This has allowed us to offer more attractive options than ever before to achieve a glasses-free lifestyle. This sort of background makes Mt Tam Vision Center an excellent choice to be your Cataract coordinator.
If you have not recently had a comprehensive ocular exam, you should consider having one before the evaluation. There are several reasons for this. First, we want to make sure that the reduced vision is actually due to a cataract. Secondly, we want to rule out any physiological reason why you shouldn’t have a cataract procedure. The last thing we want is for you to have a perfect procedure and not see as well as you had hoped because of some other underlying condition.
Upon completion of your Free Premium IOL (Inter Ocular Lens) Evaluation, you will know that:
- you are a good candidate for a cataract procedure
- which of the myriad procedures and technologies is best for you
- that you have reasonable expectations about what it can provide for you

If you would like to tour the facilities or meet the surgeons, we would be happy to arrange that for you.
Once you have picked a cataract surgeon, the next step is that our staff will help you set up a convenient pre-op exam with the surgical staff. Last of all, Dr. Frank and the surgeon will review your needs and desires and finalize the game plan as to what is going to be done, what implants will best provide your visual needs, and a time frame for the procedure or procedures.
Upon successful completion of your procedure, our staff will set up appointments for your Post-Op care. Depending on whom you choose to do the cataract surgery, the surgeon will provide the first week or two of follow-up care. After that we usually see patients at one month, three months, and six months after the procedure. Of course if additional visits are required, those are included as part of the follow-up care. Most patients are now electing to add RevitalVision® to their Rehab program. Check out our article on RevitalVision®. Cataract Surgery and Intra-Ocular Lens Replacement
A Cataract Procedure You Can Look Forward To!
The cataract world has changed a lot in the last few years. For many years, the goal of a cataract procedure was to remove the cloudy lens from the eye and then replace it with a man-made single prescription (monofocal) lens. The patient then would rely on glasses or contact lenses to improve their distance or near vision. We at Mt Tam Optometric Center have had the pleasure to work closely with some of the top surgeons of the Bay Area as the new generations of Refractive Implants have become available. This has allowed us to offer more attractive options than ever before to achieve a glasses-free lifestyle.
Refractive Intraocular Lens (IOL) Implants use different technologies to combine both a distance and near vision prescription in a single lens. The multifocal IOL’s such as like the ReSTOR or the TECNIS, act much like bifocal glasses or contacts with both prescriptions in the same lens. The accommodating IOL’s, like the CRYSTALENS, work entirely differently and rely on the muscles inside your eye to change the position of the lens allowing you to change your focus between distance and near.
As with any medical technology or procedure, it is important to be sure you are a good candidate. If a glasses-free lifestyle appeals to you, allow us at Mt Tam Vision Center to help you determine if any or which of these Premium IOL’s is right for you.
Plastic Surgery and Pre and Post Op Care
In the last few years Mt Tam Optometric center, has found ourselves doing more and more pre- and post-op care for patients having Blepheroplasty (lid jobs). What is interesting is that we are finding it to be more necessary with the “excellent” surgeons than with the “good” ones. The reason for this is that the “good” surgeons are looking three to four months out when they do the procedure. At his point the initial swelling and bruising is gone so you look great. The problem is that the tissues of the lid continue to relax and four months later you are wondering why the surgeon didn’t tighten it up even more. The “excellent” surgeons tend to look eight months out. The problem with this is that in that eight month period, you are more likely to have dry eye problems because the tissues of the lids have not relaxed enough to allow you to close your eyes completely with most blinks.
It is for this reason that we have started evaluating Blepheroplasty patients for Dry Eye conditions before the procedure. If a patient has dry eye or tendencies towards that, we discuss the options for reducing the dry issues during the rehabilitation period. Then, in conjunction with the surgeon, we lay out a game plan for both pre-op and post-op care.
Mt Tam Optometric Center is always on the lookout for innovative new diagnostic and treatment options for our patients. Dr. Frank has been watching the development of one new treatment and therapy option for over five years now. In fact, he went through the program himself last year and because of his great results, has become one of RevitalVision’s greatest proponents. It is with great pleasure that we can announce that Mt Tam Optometric Center has been chosen to be the first to offer RevitalVision west of the Rockies.
What is RevitalVision
RevitalVision is a revolutionary new technology that improves your vision without surgery, drus, or glasses. Traditionally eye care professionals have used various techniques including eye exercises, glasses, contacts, and surgeries to achieve a better focus on the retina so that you can see better. RevitalVision takes a totally different approach which works on the visual cortex of the brain, where you do the processing of the imagery. It does this by essentially increasing the number of neural connections so that you see the world like on a HD television as opposed to an older style color television. The average patient improves about two lines on a standard eye chart. There is also an average of a 150% improvement in contrast sensitivity. To most people this means better vision at night with less glare and flare.
The Science Behind RevitalVision
The research behind RevitalVision has been in development for over twenty years. A very eckalectic group of doctors from around the world has spent over thirty million dollars on research. They have taken thousands of people through clinical trials. The result is a very targeted neural training program that most people see results from in as little as 5 to 6 sessions. During training sessions, a series of visual tasks and repetitive images, train the brain and improve visual processing. The reason these sessions are so targeted is that RevitalVision Personal Vision Specialists customize each training session based on the strength and weaknesses of your last session. RevitalVision neural training is the only clinically and scientifically proven technology to improve blurred vision from the eyes by enhancing brain processing.
Will It Work For Me?
Currently RevitalVision is offered for three different conditions: Presbyopia, Post-LASIK and Post-Cataract Surgery.
We are involved in a Research Study to determine how much RevitalVision will improve the vision of our contact lens patients. We will be working with three different groups:
- Those people wearing two distance contacts, who have not developed Presbyopia yet.
- Those people who are wearing mono-vision contacts. (one eye for distance vision and the other for near).
- Those people wearing multifocal contact lenses.
If you would like to be part of this study, please give us a call at a href=”tel:+14154538906″>415.453.8906. There will be a reduced fee for the program and a money back guarantee if you feel there has been no appreciable improvement.
About the Program
The program consists of twenty neural training sessions that you can complete at home, on your computer, or in our office.
- RevitalVision includes a quick start guide, manual, cd, mouse extension cable, and training glasses. Should you have any questions, your Personal Vision Specialist will help guide the installation process and get you started on your first session.
- Each session takes 20 to 25 minutes on average.
- The software customizes each session to you pace and visual ability.
- You are professionally monitored on this web based software by your RevitalVision Personal Vision Specialist. Not only will they help you with any questions or problems you may have, but they will also be tailoring each session based on your prior sessions.
- The company is so sure about their program that they offer a 100% money back guarantee on the software if you are not satisfied with the results.
How Long Do the Results Last?
Just like learning to walk, riding a bicycle and learning to swim have long lasting effects, so does RevitalVision.
Is It Safe?
Yes. Prior to being released for commercial use, RevitalVision was researched and tested for over 20 years. There are no known risks, side effects or complications associated with this program.
