Our Commitment to Giving Back

Sight is one of our most important senses. It’s through our eyes that we most interact and experience the world around us. Without it, our quality of life is greatly affected.

Our team at Mt. Tam Optometric Center is wholly dedicated to helping preserve the sight and protect the eye health of all our communities, far and wide. It drives everything we do.

We’ve made a continuous commitment to helping those in underserved communities get quality eye care that should be accessible to everyone. We take pride in our ability to make a difference in as many lives as possible.

A Personal Statement by Dr. Frank

I had the great pleasure of helping with a local clinic run this summer. It was a joint effort between Lions In Sight, Las Gallinas Lions Club, and County of Marin Department of Health and Human Services

We had around 120 volunteers starting with our Lions In Sight doctors performing exams, RNs measuring eye pressures, opticians dispensing glasses, staff from Marin Community Clinic making appointments, County medical staff operating the “Medical Room,” plus Lions Club volunteers helping with all the other necessary functions: parking, people flow, camera operators, catering, registration, acuity testing, and so much more.

In all, we saw about 250 patients, most of whom walked away with glasses. At the end of the day, we can only help so many people, and there is always more demand for our services. But as one doctor put it: “We made a difference to 250 lives—and that is not bad.”

There were so many instances of “making a difference,” but here is a particularly notable one from Elizabeth Ferris, a volunteer on the registration desk:

I must tell you a story from today that moved me almost to tears. There was a woman, age 47, who registered with my table partner, Anabella. She had never had her eyes checked before today. I think she was nervous, but Anabella was terrific with her. She said her eyesight was now poor, and she was worried. She left to have her eyes tested, and we did not see her again. But suddenly, she burst in, went to Anabella, and hugged her. She thanked us over and over again and showed us her new glasses, the case, everything. Her smile said it all. Then she all but danced out of the building.

Annabella and I were speechless. We decided that she alone made the morning worth doing.

As one of the founding members of Lions In Sight, I am glad to say that the closure of our volunteer work overseas due to COVID has ended and that we have several clinics already scheduled for the latter part of this year. I am hoping to be able to get away in the coming year to resume my overseas work.
